The Challenge

$200/month for SEO data that should cost $5

I was paying $200/month for Ahrefs to run keyword research and site audits for my own projects. Most of the time I needed simple data: keyword volumes, backlink counts, domain authority, SERP positions. The kind of queries that cost fractions of a cent through a raw API but get bundled into expensive monthly subscriptions.

So I built CLI scripts that hit DataForSEO's API directly. Same data, pay-per-use pricing: $5-30/month instead of $200. The scripts worked perfectly for my own needs. Then the realization hit — every solopreneur and small business owner faces the same problem. Enterprise SEO tools priced for agencies, when all they need is clear, actionable data.

But there was a bigger gap. With AI chatbots becoming a real traffic source (I had seen this firsthand with Suplenet), no tool measured how visible a site is to AI assistants. SEO tools tell you how Google sees your site. Nothing tells you how ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity see it.

The Solution

6 SEO tools + the first AI Visibility Score

SiteGlint packages six analysis tools into one platform: Domain Analysis, Content Gap, Site Audit, Domain Comparison, SERP Checker, and the differentiator — an AI Visibility Score. Each tool pulls real-time data from DataForSEO's API on a pay-per-use basis, keeping fixed costs at zero.

The AI Visibility Score (0-100) is the feature no other tool offers. It analyzes a domain across multiple dimensions that matter to language models: content structure, schema markup, topical authority signals, llms.txt presence, and content parsability. GPT-4o-mini processes the raw data into an actionable score with specific recommendations. For the first time, site owners can measure and improve how AI assistants perceive their content.

For programmatic SEO, I pre-seeded 112 domain reports that generate unique, indexable pages. Combined with 6 static pages and 6 blog articles, the sitemap has 115+ URLs from day one. Each domain report page includes dynamic OG images for social sharing. The entire site is bilingual (English and Spanish) with client-side i18n.

Monetization follows a freemium model: free basic analysis, $9/month Pro, $19/month Business. Rate limiting controls API costs. Email capture feeds into a Brevo newsletter for nurturing free users into paid plans.

Key Learnings

What building a SaaS in 2 days taught me

Scratch your own itch, then productize it

SiteGlint started as CLI scripts I built to replace my own $200/month Ahrefs subscription. The jump from personal tool to product was smaller than expected. If you have solved a problem for yourself with code, other people likely have the same problem and would pay for a polished version.

Pay-per-use APIs make micro-SaaS viable

The reason enterprise SEO tools charge $200+/month is not data cost — it is infrastructure, teams, and margins. With DataForSEO's pay-per-use pricing and Vercel's free tier, the entire platform runs at $0/month fixed. Costs only appear when users actually make queries, and scale linearly.

Programmatic SEO gives you scale from day one

Pre-seeding 112 domain reports created 112 unique, indexable pages before a single organic user arrived. Each page has real data, unique metadata, and dynamic OG images. This is not thin content — it is the same report a user would generate, just pre-rendered for search engines.

AI visibility is the next SEO frontier

Building Suplenet taught me that AI referrals convert better than search traffic. Building SiteGlint let me measure that signal. No other tool quantifies how visible a site is to AI assistants. As AI traffic grows, this metric will become as fundamental as Domain Rating is today.
